Weekend getaways in Brisbane are great to explore the city. Here’s how to spend your weekend in Brisbane, from cuddling koalas to exploring food markets.

Queensland’s capital city is a vibrant metropolis wrapped around the beautiful banks of the Brisbane River, and there’s no shortage of things to see and do when you’re in town.

Weekend getaways in Brisbane are the perfect escape, offering fun, food, and relaxation all in the space of 48 hours.

Here’s how to spend your weekend in one of Australia’s best holiday destinations.

Saturday

Brunch and a wander through South Bank Parklands

Follow your feet along the waterfront to South Bank Parklands, where you’ll find a variety of cafes serving breakfast and brunch to start your weekend right. Head to the Streets Beach Lagoon for a refreshing dip after your meal, peruse your way through the markets, and even take a ride on the Wheel of Brisbane for dramatic views over the city.

Be sure to pick up a bite to eat and take it away for a picnic in the park before you leave.

An afternoon at Fortitude Valley

Fortitude Valley is one of the city’s most vibrant areas, with endless boutiques and shops (especially along James St), murals and street art at every turn, exceptional coffee shops, and plenty of fantastic bars for a cheeky afternoon drink.

Dinner at Ribs & Burgers

While you’re there, swing by Ribs & Burgers in Fortitude Valley for an easy, delicious dinner. Try the home-style ribs, juicy and flavoursome burgers, and the unbelievably thick shakes for something cool and refreshing after a long day.

It’s unpretentious dining at its best, and the perfect way to take a relaxing break somewhere you can sit back and enjoy a great meal and easy-going environment.

From here you can either call it a night and rest up for tomorrow, or venture into the lanes to see what Brisbane’s nightlife has in store.

Sunday

Breakfast at Medley Cafe

Start central and start strong at Medley Café at Kangaroo Point. This quintessential café is located right on the waterfront, offering spectacular views over the river so you can watch the city start the day and the boats cruise by with your delicious breakfast.

Cruise to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

The Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is one of the top attractions in Brisbane, letting you get up close and personal with Australia’s cutest marsupials. Here you’ll also see a variety of other Australian creatures and learn more about their conservation.

And the best way to get there is by boat. Book a ticket with Miramar Cruises, which cruises to the Sanctuary and back every Sunday, so you’ll get to enjoy a beautiful one-hour guided cruise along the river to reach the Sanctuary, and a ride back to the central city after your visit.

An afternoon and evening at Eat Street Northshore

Brisbane’s Eat Street markets are legendary in the city, and no visit is complete until you’ve explored the many, many stalls and eaten your fill.

There’s a huge variety of street food vendors, offering snacks, meals, drinks, and treats, so it’s best to do a full walk-through before making any decisions. There are also a number of stages for live entertainment, so it’s easy to while away a lazy Sunday afternoon and evening putting your feet up, enjoying the food, and watching the shows.
