The Debrief on the Beef: What’s the Deal with Wagyu?

Wagyu, history of wagyu beef

Wagyu is the beef du jour. People who know anything about beef are consuming Wagyu over other types of beef because, frankly, it is the best.

But, what makes it the best? Take it this way – Wagyu is the Rolls-Royce of all beef; it’s the best beef money can buy. It is the cream of the crop.

At Ribs & Burgers, we know a thing or two about Wagyu beef and have just launched our new range of bigger and beefier Wagyu beef burgers. If you’re craving the taste of Wagyu at a restaurant, you know where to go.

If you’re still a little perplexed about what makes Wagyu beef so good, here’s the debrief on the beef.

What is Wagyu and what’s the fuss about?

Wagyu is a Japanese beef cattle famed for its premium quality. There are four Wagyu breeds: Japanese Black, Japanese Brown, Japanese Polled and Japanese Shorthorn. Wagyu genetics means that the cattle produce a beef that is higher in omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids than other types of beef. A mixture of the monounsaturated fat and muscle creates a signature marbling effect, and this results in a texture that is moist and tender.

A Wagyu burger may have a higher price tag than, say, an Angus beef burger, but this is totally justified in the meat quality.

Wagyu beef in Australia

Outside of Japan, Australia has the largest full-blood Wagyu association – both of pure and crossbred Wagyu cattle. Wagyu cattle in Australia are typically grain fed for the latter 300-500 days of production, and sometimes they have red wine added to their feed.

At Ribs & Burgers, we source our Wagyu from Mayura Wagyu – an award-winning boutique beef producer on the Limestone Coast in South Australia. Mayura guarantees premium, full-blooded Wagyu, and through them, we can maintain full traceability of our meat.

Some Wagyu restaurants claim they use 100% Wagyu beef patties in their burgers, but this isn’t always the case. But at Ribs & Burgers, we can confidently and proudly say we use 100% Wagyu, with nothing else added. This means our Australian bred Wagyu beef has a fine texture, buttery flavour and unique tenderness.

‘Is Wagyu better for your health?

Wagyu beef is deemed healthier than other types of beef when consumed as part of a balanced diet. This is because Wagyu beef contains up to 30% more monounsaturated fatty acids, which have been proven to be better for your health than Angus beef, for example.

Wagyu beef can even help you reduce your cholesterol levels, and studies suggest that a diet higher in monounsaturated fatty acids are linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

Ribs & Burgers Wagyu range

At Ribs & Burgers we felt the demand for fast food that is of premium quality, and so we decided to launch new burgers: the Wagyu Original, the Wagyu Big Cheese and the Wagyu Bacon + Cheddar.

In our burgers, the succulent Wagyu patties are stacked with juicy ingredients and our homemade Aunty Joan’s pink sauce and are topped with a gourmet bun.

What’s more, at Ribs & Burgers you get more beef for your buck, as our patties are a hefty 200g – that’s 50g more than our other burgers. Once you’ve taken a taste, you won’t go back.
